Traditionally associated with domestic and female labour, Cocoon explores knitting as a sculptural endeavour, where long strips are sewn closed with slits that punctuate the surface.
Although the piece appears delicate as it floats in the space, each knitted tube is filled with a solid wooden core. As you move around the installation, slits reveal themselves at unexpected intervals - catching the eye, sometimes confronting - creating an intimate, shifting interaction between the body and the work.
Using natural dyes, Cocoon features hand-dyed wool and mohair, knitted into shapes reminiscent of tree trunks or “finger trap puzzles.” The mohair is brushed to create a soft halo around each form, catching the light - contrasting with the darker interior.
